MAREXPO

The basic objectives of MAREXPO are:

• Increase awareness of European research programmes (especially ESPRIT) through active information of maritime projects performed under their auspices.
• Broaden the basis and thus improving awareness of Information and Communication Technologies and its relevance and potential for maritime industry's competitiveness, and more generally for building the Information Society
• To trigger interest in companies to benefit from available project results to increase European collaboration and to become actively involved in future activities.
• To support relevant instances in the Commission for crossdepartment a coordination and to consolidate the current dialogue between industry and commission.
• To contribute to the image creating process for the high technology sector maritime industry.

To achieve these objectives, the MAREXPO consortium, consisting of eight leading companies from the most relevant sectors in maritime industry with significant experience from more than 30 successful European research projects, performs the work in three major workpackages. One workpackage works on the preparation of major show-materials and show-pieces (brochures, multi-media presentations, physical demonstrators). Main source for these show-pieces are succesful projects from the ESPRIT programme.

Major show- pieces is a CD-ROM to guide interested individuals through the world of ESPRIT and maritime projects under this programme and three demonstrators to show the impact of information and communication technology to design, automation and survey. In a second workpackage MAREXPO is represented on more than 12 major fairs and conferences on three continents in six countries. As a final workpackage MAREXPO culminated in a participation of MAREXPO at EXPO ´98 in Lisbon, Portugal with the motto The Oceans, Heritage of the Future. To further distribute knowledge and materials, MAREXPO offers cooperation and show-materials to complementary dissemination activities, e.g. for regional dissemination (workshops and seminars) sponsored by other sources.

It is essential for the competitiveness of the European maritime industry that the existing network of companies remains comprehensive, critical in size and fast to react on a very demanding and fast changing market. To keep this position up all involved companies continuously have to improve their competitiveness, increase international collaboration and take the chances offered by advanced ICT technologies. MAREXPO provides in this context a valuable information source and offers the chance to broaden the basis for cooperation. The consortium is convinced that for the benefit of all parties involved this will materialize in an increased awareness of the Commission‘s RTD programmes and in broader participation of companies in future projects.
